Ptolemy's model had Earth at the center, and the moon's revolved around the planets instead of the planets revolving around the moon and sun. The planets' orbits' moved instead of the planets as well. Geocentric has Earth at the center and heliocentric has the Sun at the center

The loops in Ptolemy’s geocentric model, and those shown on the video, are called retrograde motion.   This phenomenon is caused by Earth’s faster orbit than those of other planets.

Ptolemy was a famed scientist in the past who believed that the solar system had a geocentric model which meant that the Earth was at the centre of the Solar system and other planets went around it.

He came to this conclusion because of the retrograde motion which:

  • gives the illusion that when you pass something, it moves backward
  • makes it seem as though the outer planets were moving forward and then backward and forward again
  • made it seem as though the outer planet are orbiting Earth as a result

The reason this was happening however, was because the Earth orbits the sun faster than these planets so it overtakes them and gives the illusion that they were moving backwards and then forward again when the Earth caught up.

In conclusion, the retrograde motion made it seem as though the Earth was the centre of the solar system.
