Respuesta :
The United States chooses to get involved in the military conflict in Korea because of its containment politic toward URSS.
Further explanation
After World War II, two big blocks appeared in the world. The eastern block, communist, represented by URSS and its allies, and the western block, represented by the United States and its capitalist partners. We call the opposition between those two blocks and its various consequences, the cold war. The military conflict in Korea was the first major crisis where the USA and URSS face each other directly. The vision of the Americans in this period was simple and summarized by one word, the containment. Afraid that the URSS will take control of more countries in the world, they followed this containment politic, which means avoid each progression of communism ideology, each time that it was happening somewhere. It would have been very dangerous to let Korea fall in the eastern block because of China already led by communists. That’s why although after lost many soldiers in World War II, the USA with the support of the United Nations, participated in this war to not let the communist in Korea conquest the whole country.

The United States chose to get involved in the military conflict in Korea because it was seen as necessary to prevent the spread of communism. After World War II, US foreign policy was focused on containment of the Soviet Union and communist expansion. Preventing communist-controlled North Korea from taking over non-communist South Korea was a high priority for the United States. The war ended with communist expansion being blocked. However, the Korean peninsula remains divided into two countries to this day.
Further explanation
During World War II (WW2), the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was a member of the Allied powers, along with the United States, Britain and France. Together they fought against Nazi Germany and imperialist Japan. After WW2, tension existed between the western Allies, which were capitalist and democratic, and the USSR, which was communist and totalitarian in its economy and government. The control of some territories was divided after the war -- such as West Germany and East Germany, as well as North Korea and South Korea. The USSR was dominant in controlling East Germany and North Korea.
In 1950, North Korean troops invaded South Korea. North Korea had the backing not only of the USSR, but also of China, which had become communist in 1949. US President Harry Truman believed it was essential to stop the advance of communism in Korea.
Additional things to know:
- The United States reached out to the United Nations (UN) for approval of sending forces into Korea. The UN was an international body created after World War II to work at preventing global conflict. The UN Security Council passed Resolution 83, which said North Korea's attack was a breach of world peace. In that resolution, the UN Security Council also recommended that "members of the United Nations furnish such assistance to the Republic of Korea [South Korea] as may be necessary to repel the armed attack and to restore international peace and security in the area." With this endorsement, the US sent troops into Korea.
- The USSR was a member of the UN Security Council, but was boycotting the UN at the time because of the UN's actions in regard to the communist takeover of China that had occurred in 1949.
- President Truman referred to US military efforts in Korea as a "police action." He never sought a formal declaration of war from the US Congress.
