After the presidential election of 1860, won by Abraham Lincoln, the southern slave states organized themselves and formed a new sovereign state called the Confederate States of America. This put the country at the brink of war that later would be called the Civil War, won by the North or Union side and ended up with the formal abolition of slavery. Both sides believed in sectionalism, meaning each one thought itself better than the other. As well as their opposing views on slavery, for one it was the core of its agricultural system and for the other it seemed immoral but a common point was that both sides agreed that this war was about slavery and not anything else. Furthermore, both North and South were divided into states just that the South now followed a different constitution and had a different President. Southerners wanted to create more slave states in order to grant more votes in the elections now that the country had unorganized territory that was not turned into a state yet. The Northerners, on the other hand, wanted to free the slaves in order to also gain those votes during elections in the South and they did not believe that the new acquired territories should be allowed to become slave states.
