The layers of the atmosphere in order can be listed as followed: the Troposphere, the Stratosphere, the Mesosphere, the Thermosphere, the Exosphere, and the Ionosphere. As altitude increases, the number of air molecules decrease, therefore allowing the kinetic energy to decrease also. Another way to put it, is that as pressure decreases, the temperature decreases also.

The temperature starts at 0 degrees c and losses about 20-30 degrees the higher you go up but then regains about 18 degrees for each jump in-between levels
