God chose an unknown farmer rather than a mighty leader to overcome the Midianites. When Gideon was chosen, he placed his trust in God and believed God would use him to help the Israelites. At first he gathered an army of over 30,000, but God told him to use only three hundred men. Gideon won the battle without even fighting. At night, Gideon and his 300 men lit torches, blew trumpets, and shouted "For the Lord and for Gideon." Then they stood by and watched as the enemy panicked, and the Lord caused the enemy troops to begin fighting and killing each other.
