This is a good question, I feel that a species can only consist of a specific type of organism. Example "dogs" and "wolves" species name is canus lupus and a dog's is canus familiarus. A population can consist of multiple species.
Species are all of one type...like Canis familiaris. A population is a group of the same species, like a pack of Canis familiaris. A community, however, would include all Canis whateveris, plus all the other different species. A community lives in the woods...all the different plants and animals.
