This territory was purchased from France and doubled the size of the United States. Jefferson expanded the power of the presidency because nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the President can purchase land from another country.

The territory the US purchased from France was called the Louisiana Purchase and it included parts or all 13 states now known as Montana Norrth Dakota Minnesota Wyoming south Dakota Nebraska Iowa Colorado Kansas Missouri Oklahoma Arkansas and Louisiana.
