(2/3)x - (3/8)x =   3  1/2

(8*2 - 3*3)/(8*3)  x   =   7/2
 
(16 - 9)/24  x   = 7/2

(7/24)x  =   7/2
 
7x/24 = 7/2           Divide both sides by 7

x/24 =  1/2

x =  24*1/2

x = 12

The number is 12.
