The answer is brain stem. It is composed of the medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain. There is a debate on whether the diencephalon is included in this section of the brain. 10 out of 12 of the cranial nerves originate from the brain stem. Motor and sensory nerve connections also pass through the brainstem. The brain stem is significant in respiratory and cardiac function regulation.
