Following the first Opium War, which ended in 1842, five new Chinese treaty ports at Guangzhou (Canton), Shanghai, Xiamen (Amoy), Ningbo, and Fuzhou, where British merchants and their families could reside were opened. A huge indemnity (compensation) was to be paid to the British government and merchants also follwoing the first War. Following the second War(1856–1860) 11 more treaty ports were opened.
