Tituba was a real Barbadian woman. What little we can determine about her life is gleaned from
the transcripts of her trial. I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem is a work of fiction that depicts Tituba as
a protagonist and imagines her side of the infamous Salem story. Analyze Condé's choice in using
juxtaposition to define Tituba's point of view. How does Tituba's perspective differ from the young
girls of Salem? How does understanding Tituba's perspective influence your understanding of
history? Use evidence from the text to explain and justify your response.
